Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In my classroom, every student contributes to the richness of our learning community. As an educator, I am committed to intertwining each individual's diverse experiences and perspectives, creating an environment of inclusivity, equity, and mutual respect.

Lived Experience as a Foundation for Equity. My journey as a first-generation student with ADHD and dyslexia has profoundly shaped my development. Having navigated the "hidden curriculum" of academia without a roadmap, I am acutely aware of the need for proactive support. This background drives my commitment to Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I provide all students with the tools they need to succeed from the outset, rather than waiting for them to ask for help. By utilizing multimodal elements—such as "building" neurons with pipe cleaners and beads—I cater to diverse neurodiverse learning styles, ensuring that complex neurological concepts are accessible to all.

Fostering Inclusive Collaboration. Learning thrives in an environment where diverse voices are celebrated. My work with UNH-4U, a program supporting students with intellectual disabilities, has reinforced my belief that inclusive classrooms benefit every learner. In my courses, students with intellectual disabilities are not just accommodated; they are integrated. This provides the entire class with the opportunity to engage with perspectives that are traditionally marginalized in higher education. Furthermore, I intentionally curate course materials—readings, videos, and case studies—from researchers and individuals representing a wide spectrum of race, gender, and ability. For instance, my research on emotion perception biases allows me to lead critical discussions on how our internal predispositions can impact our social interactions and professional judgments.

Dismantling Stigma Through Psychological Science. As a psychology educator, I recognize that mental health is often a "silent conversation" in the classroom. I actively integrate mental health discussions into our curriculum, exploring how neurotransmitters, social media, and sleep patterns impact well-being. By connecting psychological science to students' daily lives, I aim to dismantle the stigma and media-driven misconceptions surrounding mental health. I prioritize responsive pedagogy, using tools like anonymous learning journals to foster a space where students feel safe seeking support and sharing their experiences.

My commitment to DEI is not a static goal but a consistent practice of building a stronger educational community. In my career, I look forward to working alongside a diverse student body to cultivate a space that embraces difference, values honesty, and empowers every student to thrive.
